Hi

I have the same problem with all of my AC HOB, from the Mini to the 300.
Whenever i turn the power back on after having shutting it off because of maintainence or power failure, the impellers fail to turn. They basically get jammed. I have to take a sharp pencil and physically give the impeller a little "push start" to get it going agian.
Also, if i do a large water change, even though i start up the filter AFTER having completely filled up the aquarium, the filter fails to prime and i have to manually add water directly into the filter.

Do any of you have the same kind of problems with AC HOBs?

C

I blow a braker about once a week, when I switch the power back on I always go down to the fish room and check all the HOB filter to make sure they are running. With 15+ tanks running with HOB's about every other time this happens to at least one of them, I have to do the same thing and restart the impeller. I think the magnet on the impeller is sticking to the motor magnet.

I have 9 AC's, rarely have a restart problem.

I've had that problem with both my AC500 (110) and AC50. Never had this problem with my Whisper C, 40, 60, and 10i filters. I also find the plastic on the AC filters to be quite fragile. The design on the AC filters are the best in HOBs but their quality leaves something to desire. You would think that ever since they've been marked up to such high prices they can improve the quality.

If you're looking for a new filter, the only filter that I've been somewhat completely satisfied with is the Eheim 2217 Canister. It was hard to get the o-ring on correctly but once that is done, it's a rock.

Have you ever cleaned your impellars? None of my ACs do this.

That should be much more of a concern than any filter. Let me know if you need help troubleshooting.

Back on topic, I've had ACs do this as well. It stops after the motor an impeller are cleaned.

sounds like dirty impellers.. or they are cloged up with sand/snails (same thing as being dirty)

The 1500w heater in the fish room and the washer is on the same circuit, so when I we use the washer the heater has to be turned off. Some times we forget to do it and pop there goes the breaker. Theres really nothing I can do, I rent. I told the landlord I was going to have a couple aquariums, he would prolly $@#% a brick if he saw all the aquariums I had, 15+ lol.

yup, its dirty impellers/impeller chamber.

I never clean mine either and all the smaller sizes of AC's do this for me.

I have the AC 50's, 70's and 110's.

the 110's always reprime, probably becaues the gaps between the impeller and shaft are larger and tend not to gum up as easily.

the AC110s have always reprimed no matter how dirty the impeller chambers get.

the smaller ones, well, not so often after a power flicker. I use my finger to get them going again...

that being said, I still love AC's.
