What is most recommended for filtration setup in these filters?

This is what I've gathered so far from other forum members

Bottom layer - Sponge
Middle layer - Matrix or Purigen
Top Layer - ???????

Some say to also place a sponge on top of everything...what do you AC owners recommend

most run a sponge on the bottom and some biomax on top.

IMO there is really no need for carbon or purigen or zeolite or any of that type of stuff.

agreed!

so do the ceramic rings work for removing odors from the tank? I like the idea of the Seachem Puigen for its water polishing ability. Seachem Matrix would be used instead of bio balls/ceramic rings.

I run the sponge and filter rings on top is all.

I have 2 AC110s. Like the others have said, I use sponge on bottom and bio-media on top (no middle layer). However, on my ac30 and ac50, I use filter floss as the middle layer between the sponge and bio-media. Filter floss just polishes the water (picks up all the small debris).

I really liek Aquaclear filters. Dependable and large basket allows complete customization of media (plus just rinse the media once a month, never needs to be replaced).

Good Luck !!!! :headbang2

No that's for bio. The charcoal is what takes the fishy smell away and removes harmful chemicals or medication after medicating your tank.Bio rings trap larger particles and are for bacterial surface area and pretty much the same with the sponge. However, they all have BB on them.
Also as someone else mentioned, filter floss is cheap and a great polisher for removing fine particles from the water and makes the water "polished/crystal/clear"
