There's a million different kinds of "bio" stuff out there. Basically what that means is,the more porous the media is the more surface area there is for beneficial bacteria to grow. that's it in a nut shell.dskrpncs;4033777; said:

If you have a tank small enough that it is reasonable to use an AC110 on it - you can do 50% weekly water changes. If you can do 50% weekly water changes, you don't need carbon.
Purigen is a different story, I'm a big believer in purigen, primarily for tanks with driftwood. It sucks up tannins like nothing else.
I would run purigen, a sponge, filter floss, and some biomedia. Not in that order.

With the media you specify, what % of water changes would be recommended and how often for a 55 gallon tank?
