so after reading all the hype on the ac110 filter,. i decided to go out and get one. i've had it running for about 2 weeks now, and really am not that impressed with my purchase.

the first thing that bothers me is that the media/holder seems to rise up on the right side and push the lid up, which worries me that it could keep going and start overflowing. i see that it has a little notch there, but is pretty small and doesn't do a thing. i trashed the carbon insert and it helped a little, but still does it.

also, when i close the lid completely, the noise just annoys me. but when i just rest it on top, it is fine. i close it the right way, and want some sort of covering to prevent evaporation, but it's just overly noisy in my opinion.

it does seem to help a lot on clarity and filtration, but these couple of things are pissing me off a little. for a hob with such excellent reviews, i want perfection! do they require a little brake in period to get settled and good to go, or is this just go along with the filter. it's on a 110 with a wet/dry as well.

That doesn't sound right...maybe return it for another one. I don't know what notch you're talking about, but there shouldn't be anything blocking the media basket. There are some notches on the side to hold down the basket, but that's about it.

tons of people swear by aqua clears as a top notch long lasting hob filter and it isnt expensive either. It hasnt failed me in my smaller (up to 75g) systems.

Two possibilities:

1. The sponge has air in it, causing it to float. Squeeze the air out of the sponge.

2. The sponge is so clogged already that water can't pass through it. If this is the case, it's doing it's job, your tank is just dirty. Clean the sponge. I try and clean them every two weeks, but I feed a LOT.

yes the notches for the basket. the left one works fine, but he one on the right, obviosly, does not. it seems very small and pointless.

i clean mine every week when i water change. not worried about the bb so much cause i have the sump as well. i take the whole filter off and dump, rinse the o's, and squeezerinse the pad.

hmm, just wondering if anyone else has had these problems, as it seems like half the site owns atleast one. thanks so far guys

got 4 of em, all work perfect. they do tend to quiet down and work better after they get a little gunked up, or broke in, or whatever you wanna call it.

Sometimes the new sponges may get deformed from being packed. After cleaning ring the sponge out with a twisting and puling motion that stretches the sponge lengthwise, just not hard enough to rip it though. When you put the filter back together push down on the submerged sponge to help get the air out.

As wurm said, the sponge is designed to rise like this when it's cirty/clogged. Hopefully this will help in prolonging the rise of your sponge. I clean mine weekly during W/Cs and do not ever have a problem.

i got 6 of them at one time never ever have any problem with the before..very please with them. maybe you got the defective one out of manuaturing..return and get a new one.
