Has anybody converted an old HOB filter into a fuge? I have a Aqua Clear 110 lying around and would like to set it up as a fuge. I think a few small plastic baffles siliconed in and one on the top to control the outflow would work great! Because of the gravity style return flow, you wouln't loose any little critters to the impeller. Has anybody tried this or is anybody heard of others doing this?

I have had a few buddies over the years do this. It works great on a small system. They just took some acrylic and put it in the first grove and emptied the main chamber. Then put macro algae in it and a light on top.

See, that is what I thought. I'm in the process of setting up a 20 gallon reef and could really use that extra wast extraction because I want 4 fish in there along with my clean up crew. The extra place for copepods to grow too is just an added plus.

It will work just make sure you clean it from time to time.

Did it help control nitrates?

yes some. But more so for phosphates. A DSB and Macro algae should work well in there!

Great Link Rottbo!
