Hello guys. I have owned and used tons of ac110s in the past. My quistion is simple. Will taken out the sponge in a ac110 change the way the water flows up wards through the media. Or cutting the sponge in half the long way to make it only half as high. I have one i am cycling on a tank of mine getting it ready for my new 75. I have just the sponge in it. and three 500 gram boxes of fluval bio max on top of that. With a filstar 11 pre filter on the intake. I was thinking of cutting the sponge in have. So i could place a bag of crushed coral in the filter to. But i think by doing so it will screw up the way the water flows through the filter. Because of the way it gets sucked in and through the sponge. I was thinking that it will make the flow by pass a bunch of the media and not flow right. What do you guys think. And have you ever ran one of these with the sponge cut or taken of the filter. And just full of different media. As allways thanks in advance.

I think you should be fine there is a right up on a nitrate absorbing mod where the guy cuts the sponge in half and due to the back pressure it doesn't overflow and you could always cut it in half and if it doesn't work for you simply put it back to how it was with no ill effects.

would be interesting to read that thread. That is weird i dont see why it wouldnt over flow because of it. Any ways thanks for the heads up. I guess i can just go get another sponge for it and c what happens. I mean they are only 7 bucks.
Im just sure that atleast one person on here has tried it like that. I know tons of people run them with just a sponge and full of bio max or ceramic i c it all the time. I just have never seen any one run one with out a sponge. or a modified sponge. Besides adding more sponges. Not less. Again thanks

You should def be able to do that. that is one of the best things about ac's, you can modify the media so easily.

My other conceren sence it is a hob. Is the weight of just filling it full of media. It is allready pretty heavy against the glass with 3 500 gram boxes of fluval bio max in it. My concern with putting in more media is that it might break the rim of the tank, or seperate it. And that much weight resting against the glass for long periods of time. Against the glass. Any one else have any insight. Thanks again.

screen name mcphishy asked me in a pm. How much bio max you could fit in a ac110 with the sponge cut in half. And it says that you cannot except pm's so you should change that setting. The answer is i do not know i havent tried it yet. But i have three full 500 gram boxes in there now with about a third of one of the boxes hanging out of the water. So i would say you could fit for boxes in one with the sponge cut in half and have them fully submerged. which 4 boxes 500 grams. Would equal 2 liters of it.

Use some of those scrubbies on top of the biomax. THey work great for me and they are lightweight,

I think that the best combo for the AC PF's (I have 5x 70's) is Large Filter, then a Blue Filter pad (can be cut from a sheet of it) and then you can put either a polypad, then bag of Carbon, then the Bio max bags. my water is always crystal clear with 2 AC70's on a 60 gallon Breeder with 13 4-5"+ African Cichlids in it including 2 plecos.

Well. I got tired of wondering. And no one seemed to chime in about it. So here are the pics. I cut the sponge in half with a long bread knife. in a slicing pattern about 6 times. It mad a perfect cut. So it now has half a sponge and 3 500 grams flubal bio max bags, and one 320 once bio bax bag it came with. For a tottal of 1,820 grams of bio max. water cover the media perfectly. And even room for a thin media bag of crushed coral on top. Check the pics. i had allmost half the water empty in the tank empty. Right down to the top of the sponge of the filstar 11 prefilter i put on. full of media and still flowed strong. Half sponge quistion put to the test. Runs and flows perfect. Now it is sittling on its temp tank cycling for my new 75. Thanks to every one who chimed in.

Is there something wrong with this site. I wont let me upload these pics. And i have never once had a problem loading pics to this site?
