You don't have to buy Marineland filters for Emps.

I run a media basket and a Supercartridge on each side. DRS also makes a whisperlike filter pouch for the emps.

biowheel 60 is cool thanks i found the link but the length wont fit on my acrylic tank, there is not enough room.
So a bed of ehiem substrate or 3 packs of filstars, in my huge ac500 is not as effective then a biowheel??
Now i have the ac500 filled with small bioballs then filstars then i made a wall with blue balls to block the filstars from coming out!

If I were you I'd just fill some media bags with ceramic and/or glass biomedia and toss them in the 500 instead of the bioballs. Get the most out of what you already have.

most likley it wouldnt. What I was going to do with an AC is fill ontop of the sponge with lava rock and put an air stone under the rock. that will provide air to the bacteira on the rock. Or you can use the eheim substrate. or whatever bio media you wind up using.
How is it that you can fit an ac500/110 on your tank but not the biowheel? The single biowheel shouldn't take up anymore space that that beast AC you have. But like AtomixIGN said. Make the most of what you have. If you have an AC then roll with that. if your looking at new filters then there are other options.

Well i have 8 tanks haha so always a tank that need more filters in my place!
So the idea of 2 biowheels compared to a submerged ehiem substarte colony in the ac500!! Scientifically which would have more bacteria?

Also the idea of running a massive airstone in ac500 with loads of ehiem substrate or rena filstars would be really cool i think that would be better than 2 biowheels. Very cool concept
Anybody know for sure????

ps i just hooked my powerhead tube under all my substrate with the air tube on it so its getting 200gph of pure air, its coming out really fast but looks like its working so far that substrate is getting some massive air pumped into the ac500 box, its going crazy in there!

The biowheels will still have more surface area and more eficent bacteira.
they are folded over so they have quite a bit of surface area.

really shouldn't run your PH with air going thru it like that. that will burn your impeller out. thats why the venturi outlets on PH's are inline after the impeller.

so that is becoming the final word biowheels blow away any under water media substrate since they are not supplied o2 feeding the bacteria is this correct

IMO yes.
Someone on some board pointed out that the O2 particles in air is something like 20,000 PPM compared to a very light 8ppm for underwater. So I would say that providing that much food to the anerobic bacteira would greatly increase efficency.

Kind of like a car engine. It needs gas and air to make power.
the less air you feed the gas the less effective it is. The more gas you add the more air you need to mix in to make it useable.
