First off the contriversy... it is a hybrid.

Second the discus. Sorry but first those are wild, second those are ~6 inches...

Why is that a controversy when all the (non-wild) discus are hybrids as well?

I'm digging the argentea.

Line breed is different then hybrid. I am not going to get into the whole thing. Search around if you want. A key element is the young of a hybrid will not always look like the hybrid. (IE maybe 25% will, but the other will be split looking more like mama, or papa of the they hybrid, causing people to sell those contaminated fish as what they look like rather then always hybrid.) Line breeds on the other hand always look the same as there parents.

My personal belief is that I enjoy hybrids. I keep them but don't breed them. I think they have a purpose in the hoby to get more people interested and into it. I also think that we need to have a solid base of people who keep there fish as close to the original as possible. (Even though that is next to impossible.)

I'm quite aware of the difference between line breeding and hybridization, and most of those discus you posted are most definitely hybirds of two, if not three of the discus species. Granted, it's far back in the lineage but technically speaking, they are hybrids.

And if line breeding always looked like the parents there would be no reason to line breed. ;) The whole point is to get fish that look better than the parents.

Just playing devils advocate. I'm one of the purists. I just don't understand the ACA's stand on Flowerhorns when the most popular fish in the show (discus and angelfish) have hybridized lineages. (If you believe in the current species classification).

Very cool, I really like that firemouth as well

Just so you know the fish was not disqualified. I don't know how it did. If you want talk about this either via pm or in some other thread I am more than willing. I was just mentioning it was a controversial fish. (As for discus being 1, 2, or 3 species that is up for debate. From what I heard today there really isn't any way to say more than 2, and well I can repeat stuff I heard in the talks but not here.

As for what is up I am dead tired. I actually missed the whole banquet since I was bagging all the rest of the donation fish up for tomorrow. I didn't want to be stuck there all night, just so I could rush home and bag up my fish I want to sell. (Also I had a few great helpers stay it through with me on the bagging... it was crazy.)

Anyways I just wanted to show you the best of show and also the peoples choice. He was raised in a 10 by himself and was always showing off. Hopefully my male will look like him in another year or two. (So far things are looking good.)

(cut pretty fish pictures)

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to cichlids, Africans even more so. What kind of fish is this? It's beautiful.

Oh sorry it is an Aulonocara sp. "Lwanda". One if not the best type of lake Malawi Peacocks. (I think Lwandas are likely one of the most winning fish in the ACA.)

Awesome Lwanda. He looks great. Nice fins and color. Were there any Victorians at the ACA show and auctions?

Is the fish in Pic 13&14 herichthys pantostictus? Thats a nice tho.meeki on show!

No. That was a Carpinte. They had a few fry in the tank with the female. Why? I couldn't say...but nonetheless she was kept in breeding dress.

Here's my offering on the photos. Hope you don't mind me horning in on your post.:)

Sitting at the hotel having breakfast. I leave for home in a few hours. Just had time to process a few photos. Here's Ron Georgeone's big Odo. I've seen this fish for several years at other shows. A true monster.:
