Acaronia Nassa update photos

A mistake that may have some very positive results. If the 98% change triggered spawning you will hold the key to do it again. I hope they did breed. Keep us posted.

Sounds promising! For the record, I do most of my water changes that way. :D I drain my tanks all the way down to the fishes' dorsal fins and refill them. Maybe that's why everything in my house won't stop spawning right now!

Speaking of nassa... guess what I got yesterday? :D

Very cool, where did you get if you don't mind me asking?

I usually do about 60% but for the next few weeks 98%ers will be SOP. Good luck with them! Pics?

Tom, for some reason I never saw your reply to this thread! I actually dug it up to ask if you'd seen any spawning?

I got four from John (snookn21) in late June. They were about 1.5" or so. They've grown more slowly than I thought, with the two largest being about 4" now and the other two being about 3". Just this week, I noticed they are a lot less social. They used to be out and about all the time, but now the two smallest always hide. One keeps to a flowerpot and the other one hides under a piece of driftwood. They all come out to eat, but as soon as they're done, it's back to their designated spots.

I don't know that I've truly got two males and two females, but based on the growing size differences and the differences of the fins on the larger ones compared to the smaller ones, I'd say there's a good chance. Mine are growing out with four Cichlasoma or Aequidens of some type. They look like ports but I haven't been able to ID them yet. Anyway, at 3" they are already spawning and getting really aggressive, but the nassa do push back. I'm probably going to have to separate them all soon.

I have to say -- these are some of my favorite cichlids I've ever kept. They don't have real dramatic colors or anything, but there's something so cool about their body and fin shape. There's also something really great about the gold/silver/black coloration on them.

Cool to see other nassa owners on here. Here's a shot of mine. I got it from Jeff Rapps over two months ago. Peaceful fish that gets along great in my 125G community. Not an active fish, mine also chills underneath the driftwood most of the time. But its bad ass looking big eyes and big mouth and unique coloration makes it a cool species to keep.

I just traded mine into George at Shark for the Heckel. I do miss them, the largest male(?) was about 7" but no spawning. I agree there is somthing really cool about them. Once mine reached about 4" they did establish terratories. They came out attacked the food and went back into thier caves. These guys are real ambush peditors and will lay in the shadows and wate for somthing to come by and in a flash they hit and gone. They are not fast growers but just so awsome, mine had a faint orang trim on the dorsal fin with blue spots and a copper sheen on a green background. I don't think they spawn too young and might take about two years before they're ready but I think they can be spawned given the right circumstances and enough time.

Nice to see you like the Nassa, these guys have big mouths and a lighting gape and suck style of catching prey so no small corys or tetras. I had some 2.5" BATS that got picked off. They can eat fish much larger then you would think.
