Thanks to all who helped me on my last thread about the appropriate ph for a ray. Today I went to my lfs and picked up a nice male retic. His disc is approx. 5". I saw him devour bloodworms so thats a good sign. Also, they were only $30 so for aroud here, thats a pretty good deal. I acclimated him in my 10 for about 2 hrs (hope that was good) before adding him to his 90g growout. Now, I'm just wondering if I can get as much input from everyone that has ever kept a ray. I just want to know what all tankmates you've had that worked or didn't work. I'm looking to add some friends. His next home will be a 150, the on to 180 and I'm not sure after that. That should be a couple years down the road. Ideally, I want to get a few more rays, but wanted to take it slow and start with one. The top will consist of a black aro as soon as I can find one. Thanks for your help.

i have geos and bleeding heart tetras which suprisingly havent been eaten, however anything new to the tank doesnt last overnight

I have Polypterus with mine which doesn't seem to work for some people but is going well for mine. The only time the ray gets botherd is if their is food near the edge of the disc and the poly go's to bite it but the poly quickly realises its not food and searches else where. not regular occurance but has hppened.

I have a shoal of 8 tin foil barbs also, these are awsome for ray tanks as they help clear up the tank! the ray mashes the left over food into the water and the tin foils eat it. My tinfoils went from 3 inch to 12 in about 4 months so make sure you can get ya hands on a tank big enough:)

I have 6 myleus red hooks.
To fast for the rays and good tankcleaners.
And 6 (ex-)cichlasoma pearsei, 2 large and 4 medium.
It's a calm good looking cichlid who leave's the ray's alone.
I had 4 Hypselecara temporalis 2 males and 2 females
but were to agressive towards all the other fish and they started
biting my ray's

Good luck looking for suitable tankmates.

with my retic i have 1 huejuta, 4 senegal bichirs, 2 angel fish, 8 silver dollars, 2 pictus cats, a black ghost knife, and a fire eel........the ray is the largest fish in the tank at about 6ish inch diameter. nothing bothers the ray, i have however lost about 10 cory cats(the sens and the retice thought them to be tasty). there have been a few other fish in the tank at various times, but that is pretty much everything.

Thanks a lot for the quick responses! I'm definantly liking the BGK, and a shoal of silver dollars. Keep 'em coming! I like hearing what works and definantly like the unusual tankmates

dont forget to do a search on tankmates also as more of these threads will pop up as its a question that pops up alot.

plus $30 is an amazing price doubt anyone else will find one cheaper since you didnt have to pay shipping. plus get it onto better food and your plan of down the road in a few years will have to be moved up in about one year as the retic will outgrow the 90 so start looking for that bigger tank.

I have a pretty good idea on the general tankmates. I just more or less wanted to hear some of the weird and unusual combos that aren't supposed to work. Like I said in my original post, he'll go to a 150 and then to a 180, which the 180 should last a few years. After that, I'm not sure.
