Acclimated to salt water successfully

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I started the brackish water cichlids thread. I guess I abandoned the thread. I will update it as I feel like I should not leave it open ended.

But for now..... I currently have a Mayan cichlid and a black belt cichlid living with toadfish at SG1.012. Only a few cichlids will survive high salinities. University studies show that Mayans grow best at SG1.007 to 1.012. I don't remember the source, but I googled it. The biggest thing is that while they do tolerate marine waters and at times some populaces may thrive in these conditions, the Mayans and black belts tend to enjoy freshwater and low to mid range brackish. BTW, I wasn't going to push them into marine conditions, just let them stay at denser water than fresh. which mine are going great and are colored up nicely.

Thank you for the update.

No problem. I will put a lot more on the other thread in a day or two. I've been super busy here lately and am on my way to grappling training now.

OP... this subject is very interesting because it often deemed as unethical because we often do not fully understand all biological processes. While I do wish to know more about the span of their existence, be careful not to seek knowledge at the expense of the health and responsible keeping of the fish. Aquanero and Duanes have incredible knowledge and the information that they pass on to us should be read, researched, regarded, and understood as we all have valuable information for the continuation of the hobby. That being said, research and plan your keeping from start to finish before beginning, then research some more. A few things I encourage you to look into early on is the effects of hypoxia, metabolic increases with salinity, and life cycles along with liver maturation.

We had a tank with what we thought was a high level of salt for our Mono's. What we found was that Malawi cichlids did not like it but Central Americans enjoyed it. The real surprise was that our Clown Loaches thrived in it. The ich problem was a non issue I am enjoying this thread nice topic change.

Great topic, guys!
