I could not find an answer to my question that I was looking for, so here goes. I wasn't sure if I should ask this in the general forum, but I put it here since it's specifically about a dat. I bought a 1.5-2" IT on Saturday and they had it in a brackish tank. Therefore, I put some salt in an empty tank and got it up to 1.007. They said it was between 5 and 10. I didn't measure the SG, but it's acting fine and didn't take a shock to the lower SG. My question is how much should I reduce the salinity and how often. Is .001 per day okay or is there another number I should be doing?

.001 a day is fine. I try not to jump more than .002 a day. I just took my brackish tank to full salt and did .002 a day and my fish are all doing great. goodluck

Agreed 100%...I always set the limit at .002 a day.

sweet! thanks for the help. That'll work out perfectly since I would like to use the tank for the baby black aro i'm getting on friday.

if its a IT then he should NOT be in brackish water anyway

when the shop got it then must have just dumped it in brackish water as it wouldnt have been imported in brackish water importeds just add a little salt to cut down on parasites

ya, IDK why it was in brackish, if the vendor had them in brackish or they just thought they should be in there or what you said. all the other fish in there were actually brackish. the place down the street had them in brackish, too.

It was at the front of the glass at the store when I was looking at them, but now that it's in my tank, it hides all the time. i will try to get a picture, but it's def an IT.

i have the water down to about 1.004, so I'll go down to 2 tomorrow, then 1 Thursday and Friday, it will go in a freshwater tank w/ just a little salt (medical amt.) I just didn't want to dump it in fresh since it was in brackish, but I'm getting it back into fresh asap.

it's hard to get good pix, but here's a couple that aren't completely terrible. as you can see, it's not really settled in. I put some FD mysis shrimp in the tank before I left this morning and they're gone, so at least I know its eating. it's the only thing in the tank and the filter is divided off, so there's only one place for the food to go.

They are just so cute when they're little. I just love their cameleon like eyes. Who would ever guess these innocent looking little guys grow to be such monsters. Very cool pwmin!!!

Very nice Indo...he'll definitley appreciate the fresh water over the brackish.

I've found a few pet stores that are under the assumption that ALL datnoids are brackish water fish. If I bring it up (especially with ITs and NTTs), I usually get the "I've read that they are brackish" story...meaning they never actually confirmed which speices are found in truely brackish areas.

the bad color maybe down to the bare bottom tank

i have seen NTT go mad trying to swim downwards in a bare bottom tank

was it in bare bottom in the shop
