Acclimating Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its him hes in an alley and he just mocked me he repeatedly said i was uneducated for doing 30% water changes every week and he said he never changes his water and i believe him cuz it looks like someone pisssed in the water its on cedar street which is an alley and he is not nice he could have simply said he wont sell me the fish not talk **** in my face on he computer he had god reviews so i drove from hayward to come home pissed off

I acclimate fish by floating their opened bag for about as long as it takes me to fetch a net.

As far as I know, in general fish aren't bothered by sudden increases in temperature, but get stressed by sudden decreases in temperature (shrimp are the opposite), and it takes several days for a fish to properly adjust to a different pH. Not sure how long it takes them to adjust to differences in hardness. A well maintained home aquarium is probably lower in nitrate than the shop water they're bagged in.
I used to dick around floating fish for half an hour or so while intermittently pouring in a bit of tank water.
I'm now of the opinion that whatever stress the fish endures being plunged into new water isn't really going to be reduced significantly by the average acclimation process, and is outweighed by whatever stress a fish endures by being trapped in a bag, ammonia slowly accumulating, refuge in sight but unable to reach it.

That's funny because he breeds alot of differint fish and is usually pretty nice. I haven't been there in a while and hope he hasn't become such a mean person, The Doctor

he was mean i think because i was a new customer but thats no how u treat a new customer by saying all that

Wow, I can't believe it's the same person. He must have changed alot. I do know that he breeds alot of his own fish like guppies and angelfish and the quality of the fish are pretty good. He used to help anyone with advice and like I said, he would give you his own homemade drip system whenever you bought something from him, The Doctor

The way i always acclimate my fish is the same as most mentioned above.

I let the bag float for about 15-20mins in the tank, open the bag and let it expand and the fish swim out into the tank.

Thats how ive always done it and have never lost a fish during the acclimating process.

You can just float the bag for fifteen minutes, then open it up and add a small amount of tank water, let it float some more, add a little more water, let it float a little while longer, and then net the fish out and add to the tank. I've never done this, and have never lost a fish. It really depends on your water chemistry compared to the LFS's water chemistry. But that guy was being completely rude. It was out of line. Don't go back.

I think I remember reading about this here on MFK. They can only withstand instantaneous temperature decreases of 2-3 degrees, but can withstand instantaneous temperature increases of up to 10 degrees.

oh well i went to a fish store in san franscico and he requires you bring a sample of water to him and he test your water and tells you if he will let u buy his fish or not he also then questioned me on how i acclimate fish and i said i let the big sit in the water for 30 minutes then he said i was uneduacted and that i have to use a drip system by the way i was in there to get a betta and some guppy and he says all his fish are wild from brazil or the amazon anyways i left the store pissed off because he kept saying im uneduacted

Thats weird. I have never seen a fish store interagate some one like that. What a d-ck. I just float the bags to make the water the same temp for like 40 minutes. Put a air line in the bag so the fish has air. And every ten minutes or so. Take a cup and put a little bit of tank water from the tank into the bag. Then net out the fish. I have done the drip method before but makes less sence to me. Sence the fish is sitting in a bucket or containor that doesnt have a heater in it
