I am planning on catching a smallmouth bass and eventually a bullhead for my new tank and I was wondering if anybody knows how I should acclimate the fish to the tank after I catch it? Back in the day when I was little and had a fish tank you would let the fish sit in it's plastic bag floating in the water to get the temperature the same before you drop him in. Obviously that isn't going to work here.

What is the best way to get him home? I was planning on filling a cooler with creek/lake water and taking him home like I do baitfish.

they need to warm up to room temp gradualy like over night in the lake water...then put them in the tank...

I would do it very slowly. Make it an all day process. Start them in lake water and let it slowly warm up. As this is happening take water from your tank and at it to the acclimation bucket a little at a time. Then remove water from the acclimation bucket so it doesn't overflow. This way over many hours the temps equalize was well as the water chemistry.

catch the fish when the lake water is cooler, they adapt better than when you catch them when it is really hott out, i did tht last summer and nine of them made it. i took a LMB asnd a sunnies a few days ago and they are fine

nicee, thye really do grow that fast? i have a 10 or so incher i caught sunday, put him in my180g with oscars etc and hes doin great. what u feed urs?

be careful with the oscars they can be kind of viscous. I put a bass in there once with my oscar, next day he was dead with a big chunk taken out of the side of his head.
