Acei acting odd?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
try to change the tank around this might give him alittle time to heal up but no gaurantees

this morning the acei was a little more active but it's fins/tail are pretty torn up. It's still eating and going for food which is good. Still taking rest at the bottom though, as it's tail is maybe 75% gone and it must be tiresome.

I'm sure some will say this isn't the best mix of Malawi's but here's my stock:

4 Yellow Labs
3 Acei's
3 Demasoni (I know, I know, 12 or more, this is no good)
2 Cobalt Blue
1 Chipokae (could become a terror too I know)
1 Red Zebra (king of the tank)

They are all around 2"-3", the demasoni are the smallest, my 3rd Acei was added about 2 weeks ago after my initial pair and is also a bit smaller. The Acei with the problem is part of the original pair.

I know I will most likely have some probs as time goes on. Demasoni are my favorite AC but fully understand my dominant male will most likely kill the other two eventually. I'm looking to get another tank to keep just Demasoni's and Labs in the near future.

If the Acei was attacked and isn't diseased, looks like an attack, it has to either be the other largest Acei, chipokae, or demasoni. I'm thinking it's gotta be the larger dominant Acei but they've never had issues before. Have never seen the dem or chip bother anything other than each other's species.

lmk your thoughts,
Thanks,
Joe

I had some problems with my acei less than a month ago. They all seemed to be at war and I had shredded fins on pretty much all of them and they had some scraps and such. All the rest of the fish in my tank were fine. Eventually they worked it out and all are healed and no more fighting. It was very strange. I have about 7 acei myself

agree 100 percent i just didnt think he was ready to try to vent yet so i thought i would try to start him off with a possibly easier way if noticeable :grinno:

Yeah, the egg spot or blue dorsal fin sex indicator are completely useless.

I had a couple of aceis that I was convinced were males based on the above indicators ... they ended up holding eggs.

Interesting, yeah my acei's have always seemed in harmony with one another, always together. I thought it was linked somehow to breeding behavior. I know as AC's grow into adults they can become more aggresive and territorial. Hopefully it pulls through, I would hate to lose it.

I think the new Acei has something to do with it. He was added and shortly after you have trouble.

I guess it's possible, the new acei was considerably smaller but they wouldn't let it join them but seemed to warm up to it slowly. No fin/tail damage on the new one at all.

I'll see what happens over the weekend, thanks for the help/advice everyone.
