Acei being picked off

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe try to rearrange the decor and add a couple of dithers.

I am heading out tomorrow to buy more rocks and small pots for caves.

How does this sound? I am also going to up the filtration. I do about a 35-40% wc 1xweek. WC's are not that big of a deal to me because I have a python and the tank is in the living room which is not too far from the kitchen sink. Here's my list:

2 acei
4 red zebras
6 msobos
5 lab hongi

I am going the online ordering route- got too worked up at my LFS's. The one really good one only had very small juvy yellow labs and I was afraid they would get eaten. Went to 2 other stores with "mixed africans" tanks that looked like a bunch of unknown, overpriced, undercolored fish :(

I'm also thinking of getting a bristlenose pleco for all of the lovely green algee. I scrape and scrape and it comes RIGHT back!

ETA- I also have 3 blue flame columbian tetras that I guess you could consider dithers. They were left-overs from my switchover to cichlids- I'm surprised they haven't gotten killed, actually.

If you want to cut down the algae, limit the light. BN plecos do remove some of it, but not as much as you would think. Mine spend most of their time eating dropped food. You should see them, they are literally as wide as they are long. Ahhhh... my little horse-shoe crabs..:D

The first african cichlid that died on me was an acei. The aceis are probably too laid back for the red zebra and the msobo. The acei that I use to own just minded his own business and he did not bother anyone always looking afraid. Fish especially cichlids do smell fear. I suggest moving the aceis or trading for africans that can handle the aggression of your other cichlids. Or your planned addition of more cichlids will help reduce aggression to the aceis. Hope it works for u!

I keep 35-40 in a 70 and it keeps the aggresion way down... I have had this set up going for a year and although I am looking to upgrade in size of tank the number of fish definitely keeps the aggression down but I also am careful to change the way alot more than normal so as to keep my parameters sparkling...
