I'm thinking it's just the payara trying to establish dominance since the aces were added so recently. Just keep an eye on them and hopefully nothing further happens.
You're absolutely right about the payara being able to cause serious damage to the cudas, but I haven't heard of any tats just flipping out and killing multiple tankmates out of nowhere.
