aclimatizing red tail catfish

hi quick question I just got my baby rtc today overnight courier is it best to acclimatize him over say 2 hrs so not to stress him or ph shock would hate to loose him trying to rush it or anything I also have a bottle of cycle it has a dosage on it for adding new fish should I use this also thanks for any info ?

I moved his thread here so it would hopfully get a better response. So the OP said I hope (putting it in the wrong section) didn't cause trouble that's all.

I would do a slow acclamation over a few hours. If you have a 5 gallon bucket put the fish and the water it came in into it. Every 20 mins take one cup out of the bucket and add a cup of tank water over a 3 hour period. Then net the fish and place it into the main tank. Never put the water it came in directly into you tank always use a net. If you have a test kit test the tank water compaired to the transport water if close in PH etc the time can be much less.

Oh, thanks Tom lol. To the Op- 2 hours is excessive. I would drip him in slowly for about 30 minutes and then put him in. 2 hours is too long for a fish that was just shipped overnight.

I always do a temp adjustment and net it out into a QT tank/empty of fish but cycled tank. Ammonia is your biggest concern as soon as you open that bag the ammonia will start spiking.. if the water looks nasty to begin with ( ie the fish pooped) I'de temp adjust w/out opening the bag.. then open the bag and net the fish out into its tank. lights off for the day, and leave it be.

I'll be honest, I always temp adjust and do the net/drop method now reguardless of how the fish looks in the bag. Lost more fish from "acclimating" then anything else.
