Have you ever seen an adult silver swim? Silvers have a very soft tail. Even an adult 3 footer will be able to turn gracefully in a 2.5ft wide tank. 5' length x 2.5' wide x 2.5' height. The width of the tank is more important for aros than the length. Like I said, those measurements are minimum. If you can afford a bigger tank, than all the better. Be smart; just don't pretend to be

^ agree 100%.
commfreak, while obviously knowledgeable regarding keeping fish (i base this assumption on what you wrote about salt and damaged fins.), you are very child like in your aggressive tone.
Play nicely, read what other write and take other posters opinions as written by fish keepers who are as, and in some cases more knowledgeable than you.
also please read my sig. The person in the room who spouts off with regards to how much they know in quite often the most stupid.
5 foot long is too small for an adult silver period. I have a 18 month old Asian RTG in a 5 foot long tank and it looks about the right size with enough swimming space, maybe I'll need to go bigger in the future, we'll see. If i'd have put a silver in there i could answer that question now.
My silver is approx. Nine months old and 20" long and I feel he needs more swimming space then the 6 by 2 by 2 foot tank he is in and will be getting a bigger tank soon. You've gotta remember aro's are constantly moving.
