Acrylic Algae Cleaner

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the tiger shark.

Pros: Strong Magnet and handles 3/4" easily (I wouldn't get the 1" version), with the acrylic pad it cleans well, inside portion floats, well made with ol' school wood block style and one time purchase (other than replacing the pad/felt eventually).

Cons: Price, Any magnet acrylic magnet cleaner with sand substrate

I also have other tools in my "arsenal", including the Kent telescoping wand with cleaner brush. I think the convenience of any magnet cleaner is that when you want to clean your tank between WC, it can be a hassle to go to garage grab towel and cleaner, remove lids (which usually are dripping from condensation) and why I need towel, clean, clean, put away stuff and put lid back on. The magnet is just there ready to go.

I know, first world problems. I'll go all out on WC days, but want to minimize work as much as possible in between changes.

Do you have a link to that kent product? Is it an aquarium brush? I tried searching but came up with non-aquarium items. I actually use a microfiber telescoping car wash brush on my tank because it is 8ft x 4ft x 30in deep which makes it extremely hard to clean. My hope is to get the magnet to help with the sides and then use the brush for the bottom and back of the tank. Does your tiger shark do well with corners? That is my biggest struggle. It is not easy cleaning corners and I don't want to be putting my whole arm in the tank with my aimara.

You can use plain magic erasers without soaps or anything in the tank. Works like magic to remove algae. It might be the same as the white sponge algae removers but cheaper. It's ok to use generic magic erasers too as long as they don't have any chemicals added.

Thank you for the suggestion. I saw on reef central that a number of folks use these. My challenge is again getting to the bottom of my tank. It is 30in deep and I am not comfortable stick my whole arm in the tank.

DYI a little stick attached to the eraser? haha! My 120g is 26" deep and I have no prob sticking in my whole arm after I rinse off any lotion or sunscreen. But try cleaning the bottom during a water change when the water level is lower?

All 4 sites I looked up are out of the 24"-36" wand. But here's a link for reference.

The white alge pad you put on the algae scrubber extends by 1/8" beyond the internal blick so it helps with the corners.

op/ i too will have your problem in a few years...

i jumped and splashed a bunch of water today while trying to fix a plant in his tank...

mines little too....

there is a magnet spinning thing for a drill that spins n buffs...

I use a 8-9" Fei Feng Flagtail in my 550 and that thing keeps that tank spotless better than any brush could. I even had some ramshorn snails in the sump and got afraid theyd explode once they get into the main tank and the Fei Feng effectively killed off any in the tank as well. He's the first flagtail Ive had. I got him around 2.5" but by now I can say Im a 100% believer in their utility in aquariums. I've had a handful of plecos together in tanks 1/10th the size that couldnt keep up with this one fei feng. Achara 2 - Copy.jpg
