Acrylic repair Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got the impression that they weren't cracks all the way through the tank, just surface cracking/crazing.

I'm still at a loss for why anyone would think melting the tank would fix cracks all the way through the acrylic. There are products out there for fixing cracked acrylic windows.

Here are some pics of the tank its been up and running for like a week and so far no problems all the cracks are on the outside.

I attempted to use the heat gun when the tank was empty and laying on its back I thought it would melt the cracks closed it did but when it cooled they multiplied in the spot you see inside the circle towards the right

I think I'd put that side towards the back, hit the new 'front' with some rubbing compound and a buffer from the auto parts store and call it a day. You'll never get rid of all of it, but you can improve it quite a bit. Ask an auto parts store for something to get rid of hazing on headlight covers. They're acrylic just like your tank.

good idea:) but the only problem is that the back is black acrylic w/ an overflo. i will try the auto parts store for the compound to see what happens

Having buffed out several headlight covers I can tell you it is hard work.. Even with an electric buffer its hard work.. If your arms aren't jelly by the end of the day you didn't buff enough.

Your damage looks pretty deep, so I doubt it will fix it much at all, but it might help a little.

you will net get rid of those marks on the tank, it looks like someone has used something on the tank and it has had a reaction to the crylic and has caused it to crazed so im afraid you are stuck with it, if you do use a compound then use a fine 1.

D

im patient and determined so I will try anything once to see what happens. Thanx everyone for your input on this subject it is greatly appreciated
