Acrylic seam repair/ assessment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is there a tip or trick to pouring the Weldon so it doesn’t get too hot and craze or bubble?

For the bubbles… use alot of glue and squeeze them out placing ur patch one end at a time… for crazing no lol… the “proper” way is to put the entire tank into an oven and aneel it much like “tempering” in metal.

I just read about The White Beast. So sorry bro. Shouldnt have brought it up.This world is getting crazier by the minute. The things society allows and celebrates vs what it doesnt allow is effing insane. We pay crazy taxes to pay for some frustrated desk jockeys to screw with our life and ruin the country. The end is near!

All good my man… chit happens lol… would have never pursued my lure buisness if it weren’t for the circumstances that happened. My shop is located where my 3,500 gal tank was supposed to go. Can’t let em kick ya when ur down. Much like when a tank leaks, do u cry… or pick urself back up and move forward lol… Pretty much hate humanity now ?, but theres still a few good people left in the woodwork. Such is life i suppose… trust noone, keep to urself ??‍♂️?… i try to warn the masses about even posting pictures but ignorance is bliss as always. Im just some crazy “old timer” these days ?. If u have animals u enjoy, keep them to urself. In this age, 1 picture or comment can ruin ur life lol… or at least change it very drastically.

Well first of all, when my tank leaked, I did cry! LOL second I don't trust anybody either. I have a gift or a curse that lets me see people's angle in about 30 seconds. It makes me keep most people at arm's length which works because most people suck anyway. But you have an unbelievable gift of craftsmanship, cool interests, and artistic ability. Take a look around at what qualifies as men these days. You're a throwback bro. You walked me through this **** when I couldn't stand listening to myself. You have rejuvenated my hope in society and I hope we can sit down with a glass of whiskey one day . And third, if you're an old-timer, I'm a freaking dinosaur!

Hey man, i got 4 years out of that fix and its starting to leak from the bottom corner. Just to refresh your memory ( its all in this thread) i ran a vertical acrylic L shaped rod over the existing rod. Algae grew behind it. Im attaching a pic. I either didnt use enough Weldon 40 or pushed it too hard when applying it. I was going to get a new tank but this tank has the 2 curved front ends and the canopy and stand are curved and all the new tanks are rectangular. Now im leaning towards redoing the seams by pulling the tank , standing it up and pouring the fillets on each seam like you told me to do origimally.
Would you pour a weldon fillet on each side of the 3/4 inch rod i installed, or would you pour enough to encapsulate the entire rod? Can it be poured that thick or does it have to be in "layers".
Any advice on how to tip the tank and hold it in place? How long would you let each seam set before rotating the tank to do the next seam?
Have you used the low voc weldon 40 and is it just as strong? Does it still smell bad in the house?

Thanks again.. here we go again

Damn… just looks like it didnt adhere that well… it happens… i have 1 very old 450 thats been through the absolute ringer with glue. Its got patches on the inside, outside and giant 1-3” pours of glue encapsulating the old/failed patches inside.

Lets start with ur stand… is the tank unlevel towards that seam in particular? And is it on foam?…

If its on foam, take it out… def, do a level check and add shims as needed even under the acrylic and top of the stand itself. Tank i had keep leaking after several repairs was on foam and an unlevel stand. Uneven pressure over time will find a way to break things.

I havent heard of or used the new low voc 40. Sounds pretty cool tho as the original is most heinous lol…

I guess at this point ill try and get u some pics of my “worst and most desperate repairs” lol… You can put a patch of 1/4”-3/8” thick material and #40 on the outside of the tank running the entire length of the seam. It doesnt look too bad in the end. I have 32”x3”x1/4” strips on the outside fronts of my 450. They kinda go unnoticed.

Only other “crazy” option is to put a piece of 1/4” at a 45 inside the corner. Glue that in 1st then fill the entire void behind it with 40 giving u a ridiculously thick new seam that encapsulates/covers all the old rod/work. I did this twice and it worked. I drilled a hole in the top of the tank to get the glue in the 45d pocket. I used a small hole and it made alot of bubbles squeezing 40 out of a mixing bottle but now that ive done it wrong twice 😂 i could do it again better. It worked tho and keeps ya from having to move/flip the tank if ur alone.

Of course tip and pouring it will also work to cover all that old work. Ive mixed up to a half gallon of 40 at a time and done the same. As for tipping the tank ive used whatever i had around the house. Bricks, chairs, wood, etc… glue sets up in around 40 min and u can move it around just fine until its fully cured after a few days.

Lemme read back here and see what i told ya the 1st time 😂😂

Thanks for the help! Judging from the water level, the tank looks pretty level to me. When I pull the tank out I'll see if it's sitting on foam. Most websites recommend something between the tank and the stand, no? I was going to put this 1/8 inch neoprene leveling mat under the tank, once its repaired, from BRS. https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/neop...D=4760&indexName=brs_prod_m2_default_products
As for the stand, it's built into the wall like a tank. The top from what I can see is two pieces of 3/4 inch board one on top of the other, but
the tank hangs over the stand 1 inch on the 72 in long curved side and a little more than 1/4 on each end. It looks like there's 1/8 inch board between the tank and the top of the stand. I'd rather not start ripping the top of the stand out, but hanging over 1 in seems like a lot. Can I get away with the 1/4 inch on the sides?

I'm leaning towards the tip and pour method. Would you encapsulate the rods that are there or pour it on each side? Seems like I'm going to need a lot of product. And how would you do the bottom corner where the length, width, and height all meet? It seems like that could be a weak spot if the water is getting under the rod where it meets the bottom of the tank. I could try to balance it on that one corner, but would you do that before or after you do each long seam that connects to that corner? Hopefully you understand the question. Thanks for all your help!

Do you like how I jumped back into an eight page thread from 4 years ago like we just talked yesterday? You're a great man for all your responses! Hopefully others are following.
