Acrylic thickness for a 4x8' window

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I once asked a different place that was not the place I got the $1300 dollar sheet from and for a 10 foot long by six foot tall three inch thick sheet of acrylic they wanted $20,000 for but the place I asked about the four foot by eight foot sheet said that if I was serous about buying a sheet six foot tall by ten foot deep they could try and help me get it cheaper.

1" thickness of cast acrylic can support a 4' height if the pieces are 48"x48". Also may be cheaper to find them this way. If you use a full sheet (48"x96"), put a support in the middle of the sheet to prevent serious bowing. Anythingfish's 8,000 gallon only used 1.5" acrylic for full 4'x8' windows and atleast a 6' height. Yes your acrylic is going to bow, but who cares? Most every factory built acrylic tank i own or have seen bows. 30" tall or 36" tall acrylic tanks should not be built out of 1/2'' but several different companies make them this way. simple...to save money? With the right frame/supports 1/4" acrylic will support whatever height you want. It all comes down to how much viewing area you want to sacrifice for price $$$$$

I would go with the thickest stuff possible in that while I was on a criuse ship the engineer of the ship told me that the port holes most of them would not be able to hold water back like a fish tank with water pressure on them even though they get hit by giant waves all the time on the ship. So I would not use the thinest sheets possible for something like this.

Also I wounder would these sheets be able to hold the weight if someone jumped into the the tank in that a 5000 gallon tank would be pretty tempeting for prankesters to jump in it and go swimming around it wanting to be seen.
