I never use activated carbon in my tanks because i don't believe it's necessary. However, my tank water has a yellowish tint due to tannins from my driftwood which i would like to get rid off. I'm tired of just waiting for it to just go away. How effective is using activated carbon for this and on average how long does carbon last before it stops working and needs to be replaced? Also is there any other method i can use to get rid of the tannins?

I used purigen in my filter and that seemed to remove the tannins I had, plus had the benefit of lower nitrates which is always nice

:screwy: your fighting to get rid of tannins and I am fighting to get them in....other then presoaking the wood just deal with it. Or don't use wood.

some people like the look of some nice driftwood, however don't want the murky tea bag water look..
just because you want a certain look in your tank doesn't mean everyone else wants the same..

That's why I gave the presoaking option. That is about the only way you won't get tannic water.

Yeah i like driftwood in my tank but i also like clear water so i will try the purigen. I like that it lasts 6 moths and is rechargeable.
Pre-soaking isn't an option for me as i have nothing large enough to soak the driftwood in.
I don't know why you are fighting to get tannins, I think getting them is much easier than getting rid of them. All you have to do is add driftwood.
