activated carbon with discus ??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would love to keep my tank tan with the blackwater amazon look. looks more natural and it benefits the fish. too bad i can never keep the tanning longer than 3 days.

Carbon cleans up your water by absorbing the fish waste. It holds on to it until full then releases it back into the water ten fold. By the time you realize this is happening it could be too late. You're gonna have a spike and the fish wont be able to handle it. Also, if you plan on using carbon you'll rob your biological filter of the stuff that keeps it running strong-fish waste. Just remember, carbon has a very short life time. A fully matured biosystem can outlast the life time of most of your fish. Good luck with your Discus Monsta.

Darippa, I will try to be nice but what HOGWASH!.....none of what you said is true. Carbon does not De-absorb in aquaria. Yes, it will clear out your tannins and it won't hurt your fish. Use it if it pleases you. The only downside is its expensive.

i second that, carbon will not release toxins back into your water! the only think that might is your filter if proper cleaning is not taken. I have heard myths about filters becoming nitrate enclosuers, but never just the carbon.

Thanks for the replies guys...
I've decided not to add the carbon.

Filters become nitrate factories when the debris is not rinsed out regularly. Just take your filter media and swish it out in a bucket of old tank water.

If you do decide to add carbon, which I will be doing myself, remember that carbon will absorb some the trace elements that Discus like. You'll need to add a suppliment like discus code or something like that.
