activated carbon...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Carbon is good for two things, polishing water and removing meds. The only time I use it is to remove meds. I don't know what you're talking about with the HITH disease.

agreed

i belive there was a thread here about an oscar having hith whenver the poster use active carbon

but based on experience non of my fish had hith because of active carbon

i heard that having activated carbon in your filter with create the HITH disease. Is this true?

Yes, this is a theory which has gained some traction within the aquarium community. As far as I know, it has never been thoroughly researched and has never been definitely proven. The basis for this assertion seems to rest predominantly upon the observation that on certain occasions, fish with HITH have apparently recovered after activated carbon was removed from the filters.

i replied to that thread u speak of and mentioned the theory some people have, i don't know if this theory is true.. i don't have an opinion when it come to carbon. i would use it if i needed it, but i don't.

Some people feel that carbon may remove some of the beneficial minerals found in the water leading to an increased incidence of HITH. At the same time, the mineral imbalance may be caused by an increase in Hexamita organisms in the intestine, which may lead to malabsorption and a decrease in the absorption of the needed vitamins and minerals.

again this is just from what ive read, not saying its true..its just some people's theory.

Carbon does not cause HITH but the presence of excess carbon stimulates the parasites responsible for HITH into reproduction, hence the thought that Carbon causes HITH when in reality it aggravates a latent case of it.

Carbon is good for polishing water and removing color and odor...like from medications or driftwood.

Poor water quality or poor diet (e.g. oscar on feeders) are much, much more likely to cause or contribute to HITH than anything.

That carbon causes or contrinutes to HITH is an unproven hypothesis. I've used carbon (periodically) for over 25 years with HITH-prone fish (Satanaperca and other south american cichlids) and only had HITH issues with a couple of fish on tanks that needed more water changes (my bad...not the carbon's)...

source?

HITH is believed to be caused by hexamita protozoa. the use of activated carbon should not cause this protozoa to bloom in numbers..

Activated carbon is great for keeping contaminants out of water and help removing SOME med's. But remember to change it once a month or it will slowly release back in the tank what it pulled out and always use black diamond it work's the best.
