Active Swimming Predatory Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Golden wolfish would be my pick or if u are willing to start over get a small pack of petrochromis...i used to describe my old petrochromis school as the exodons of african cichlids lol

School of exodons?
I love the way these guys feed. I always feed these guys when I go to my LFS.

There are African predators that are around 8-10inches like Nimbochromis, but they should be in a larger tank imo. I had a Venustus that would feed out of my hand...he was a jerk to everything else though.

Yes i would recommend a larger tank but as said with a 55 gallon you really dont have enoigh room ....i would stick t9 something that doesnt get past 6 inches at most

With the same length of tank you could go 75-90 gallon and do the wet pet thing...and sell one of your 55's in the classifieds if you don't want 3 tanks. You could just consolidate into 1 tank as I did and get at least a 6 footer that greatly increase your options. I realize real-estate and living space vs tank space is a thing

A large school of tiger barbs(predatory to smaller fish).
Larger species of tetras.
Spotted pictus catfish.
Not super active, but dwarf pike cichlids.
Not that active without dithers, single Jack Dempsey.
Multiple species of killifish.
Clouded archer fish.
Angelfish I learned could be somewhat aggressive/predatory.
Betta fish.
Albino senegal Bichir.
Many more species of fish, there are a lot of predatory small fish that many don’t see as them, but in the wild they will hunt shrimp/ or smaller fish.
All of these I listed above I think could work, just not all of them all together.

Predatory cichlid are not active swimmer, mostly hunt by ambush. To look for predatory fish that are active swimmer, you should check out fish in the characin family or toothy tetra in this video.
