acutirostris compatibility question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sweet fish! I'm just about sold. :D I just ordered a "bunch" of fish from TUIC that I had been watching, so I just have to decide how many to get, and whether to go ahead and add them to this order (consolidate shipping = better; increased cost of fish = ). I know I'll probably give in and add them...so all it comes down to is how many to get. I usually get groups of at least 6, but I don't usually order $50 fish. :WHOA:

His price on the parrots has gone up because of demand. I got my Brazilian parrots at 2.5" for $45 a pop...i got 4 of them...haha. The Venz. that he had at the same size were going for $25 a pop...just to give you an idea. He just recently bumped the price on the venz. up...:(. if you have the space and the money, go for it...;)

OK...I have the acutirostris in a temporary tank until I get the mbuna out of my 180...and a group of psittacus in another temporary tank. :D In setting up the tank for these guys, what would be your recommendation as far as plants are concerned? Good idea? Bad idea (I have some fish that will not let me keep plants, others that do fine with them...)? I plan on using a light color pool filter sand as substrate, with lots of driftwood.

Sounds great man!! You get the venz. from Rapps? Rock on!! How many did you get? The more the merrier, will also help lower some of the aggression, and bring out their colors. My parrots did dig sometimes, but it wasn't anything horrible. I never tried keepin them with plants, it might or might not work. They are herbivourus though, so include a lot of plant material in their diet...;). Mine would eat just about anything i threw in the tank though...haha. Make sure none of the plants are poisonus or harmful...or expensive, test them out. Drift wood is a very very good idea....:). Keep your water CLEAN!! They are VERY prone to HITH, so stop it before it starts!! I never got any with mine, i had harder water though so that might have helped a little bit. Again, congrats, and post pictures!! :D

I picked up a group of 6 psittacus from Rapps. I consider the higher price to be a pretty fair compensation for the increase in size, so I'm happy. The group is waiting in a 150 until I get the 180 converted from African to SA...will post some pics then. They were very angry for a couple of days when I got them (well...they were "playing dead," hiding, etc....), but they are out and about and eating like there's no tomorrow.

Aye, Hoplarchus psittacus is one of the easiest cichlids to feed...practically hit any thing in the tank that fits in their mouths! watch out for small tankmates though. Scat. lost one once when it tried to eat a Satanoperca jurupari that was too large for it...:(.

You'll have to add some of my 'Brazilian' strain to your 'venezuelan strain' once mine get larger and need to down size...;)...swap? :D

Sure thing! Of course, I'm going to be seriously overstocked unless I thin this group out as they get larger, too.

Do you keep any plecos with yours? I'm probably going to get something that already has some size on it, and that gets big...either a common, gibbiceps, rhino, etc. I'd rather have something that looks a little better, but don't want expensive/dangerous fish food in the tank.

You won't have a problem with the plecos...as long as they are above 3" they will be aight...;). I kept regular BN with mine no probs...;). As long as its not small enough to fit in the mouth...ie...4" psittacus shouldn't be kept with anything under an 1"...simple..haha. You could pretty much keep them with any pleco you wanted! ;) I'm workin on gettin a trio of L-095 to go in with mine right now....:woot:

That's one that I've been looking at. Do you have local shops that carry those, or are you using someone online, like somethingsphishy.com?

L-095? hahaha...good luck man!! They are a pain to find. I've got some on reserve for me right now, just waiting for my paycheck and then I am gonna get them! About 4" long. www.somethingsphishy.com does have some NICE sized ones for a pretty good price. Only problem is they RAPE you on the shipping. If you are aight with that, then go for it. www.aquatico.com has some as well i think.

I got most of the conversion from african to SA done yesterday, and the acutirostris is in the tank. Another tankmate question: I also have a couple of spectibiles that I temporarily have in a too-small tank (I have a larger tank waiting for the arrival of some racks in the garage). They are a little larger than the psittacus. What has been your experience with them, from the standpoint of aggression? My pair has been in with a young marmorata (or lent...still need to get you some new pics), and they have "held their own." Think they'd be OK with the less-aggressive guy?
