I'll be setting up a 300g african tank with a 140g sump (won't actually hold 140g with the lower baffles etc). There is a larger central section that is basically empty. Wondering if it would be good to set up a plant cutting section using something easy to grow like pothos (not a water plant, you'd recognize it as a vine type potted plant). I could build a tray from eggcrate where I can put the cutting's base through the eggcrate and hang into the water. Very easy to root in water and I'm thinking this might take alot of nitrates out of the water. Just set up a light on a timer and run it opposite hours as the main tank.

What do you think?

In the middle section you can also just dump porous bio media in them...

Pothos are good...better if you can provide a light...
I will be building the stand and can easily put a light in there. My 6 foot sump has 4 compartments plus 2 baffle sections. Plan on leaving the inflow and outflow clear of stuff other than heaters. Both baffle sections are 2 inches wide and have 2 - 1inch matts for bio media. 1 22x10 inch empty section I was going to add more bio media as you suggest. That leaves a 22x22 inch section empty. Thot I could maybe put pothos in there and keep it with open space for a hospital tank (unless that size is simply too small for 6-8 inch fish).
