It's algae, so cutting it in half won't harm it any. They're formed when a piece of an algae mat breaks off and is tumbled around by waves. So it's good that they're playing with it and constantly rolling it around. Cutting them too small might make them more of a "snack" than a "toy", though.

It's important to clean them once a month or so, too. Just squeeze them out like a filter sponge. Otherwise they get crud built up in them and other forms of algae start to grow on it which kills it off.

Also, the ones that are dying fast, are fakes....Gr8's look real...Here is a comparison...First pic is fake, second is the real deal. For the above poster, I do not believe that is how they form. The ones we buy (The real ones) Are NOT real at all LOL!....The are algae, but they are hand rolled, and the same product is the end result. Gr8, it will propagate by division all on its own, when it is ready. They are said to bring good luck when taken care of well :)

A very useful source of info for moss balls. After gathering information from many different sources, I reckon this one ranks high in the care metre. Doesnt cover everything about them, but enough to propogate them and care for them.

Im with you Schaadrak on this one.
