We just changed from gravel to sand w/o removing the water, getting ready for stingray. How long does it take for the water to clear up? We have a few silver dollars to add to the tank to help cycle, they are in another tank right now. Do we need to wait for the water to clear before putting moving them to this tank?

It could take 4-8hrs ish... if you have a pleco... dont put it in there... your tank will never be clear

just have patients. the sand will settle. give it a full day and you will see it start to clear up. i changed one of my 120g the same way with black sand and i had 3 plecos all over 6 inch and my water to this day is crystal clear, so the plecos will not do anything.. the cloudiness is just sand particles suspended they will settle.

Is the tank not cycled yet? If so, no need to wait until the cloudiness goes away. Throw the silver dollars in.

Just guessing that you didn't rinse the sand in a separate container first eh?
:)
stir the crap out of the new sand, let it settle for 15 minutes then do a massive water change to get rid of the dust still there as much as possible
:)

could take a day or more depending on weather or not you rinsed with a screen prior or if you purchased pre rinsed sand
i did it with unrinsed sand and didnt screen it once many tanks ago and it stayed for a couple of days and a couple of water changes (being sure not to stur up the bottom to much) and any fish that is gonna come into contact with the botom if there is alot of debris is going to muck up the tank even after ...especially the ray id think
have a good one

Ive had bad luck with play sand. It seems to never clear. If you used pool filter sand you should be good in 4-6 hours

it was caribsand and hubby did rinse but not till clear , after 12 hrs doesnt look any better. should we scoop out, re wash and do a water change or just water change???

id star over again as much as a pain in the ass as it is
but if you are to do that you should disturb the sand a little while siphoning to get rid of most of the fine particlesand then thouroughly rinse with a fine screen it will take a while but it will be better
and depending on what kind of filter you are runing you can add some fine filter pads to the layers of your set up for a few days till its clear then start your cycling process
all over again
and like i said rinse real well if you want to get a ray of anykind because they tend to kick up dust all the time
like i said ive done the exact same thing as this many tanks ago
again hope this helps
have agood one
and i dont know if you know how to reply to a specific person yet but you hit quote on the bottom right
have a good day

thanks much for all the help. we drained all the water, took the sand out and washed and washed and then washed some more and... wow what a pain that was. Anyway, sand is back in the tank and fresh water. Looks much better, basically clear. Time to get it up and ready for a ray. All I can say is that once you think you've washed the sand enough keep going.
