so 25 of my endlis have the same nostrils and this one does not because he is what"special"

I suppose there is no congicus
congicus002.jpg
in this photo either.
no need to be sarcastic. The one in front is a congicus for sure. the two in the back are endli. the one where i can only see half the body is either ansorgii or a guinea lap of sort. can't clearly see enough of it to tell for sure.

special or not, doesn't change the ID. One of my palmas palmas has flared nostrils, while the others don't. And one of my weeksii has totally crazy flowing flared nostrils, and the others don't. But they're still palmas palmas and weeksii.

the dorsal finlet count for endli typically ranges in 11-14 (usually around 12). for congicus the typical range is 12-15 (usually around 13). so it is true that generally congicus has more, but it's close enough that you can't say an individual is a congicus just because it has 13. There are other features that are much more meaningful.

so show me a picture of your congicus infblue.
i don't have the pics with me, but i've posted many pics before in the forum here.

i am only being stubborn because i know this fish came from tonyin as a congicus.

more expert opinions from some of our far east poly keepers would be nice as well.

it's hard to say with certainty what the fish came in as once it's changed hands, because you have to hope that the ID didn't get mixed up somehow along the way. when the ID isn't in question, then everythings kosher. when it is, well thats unfortunate.

i mean even if someone orders directly, they can still get the ID wrong if they order a bunch of species and can't properly ID them themselves.

anyway, its not like you don't have a congicus. you have at least that one with the injured nostrils/mouth. just compare the one in question and that congicus. and please don't tell me they look the same.

I agree with Infblue on all this! The first pictured bichir is most definately an P.endli endli. Actually looks captive bred to me! The last pictured bichir, behind the ornate, is a P.endli congicus. While I consider Toyin to be a great importer of really high quality bichirs and a great person to work with, he is not above making a missed ID. Some of the latest Laps that are coming in with incorrect ID's or at the very least mis-spelled location sites, simply get past along because some collector in Africa slaps a name on it! I would also suspect that with over a hundred and twenty bichirs, at some point you start forgetting where you got them from and what they were labeled as!:D

infblue is one of the best ID'ers of bichirs in any forum that I know. you'll be hard press to find a better expert when it comes to bichirs.

I am by far no expert but the first pics do look to be an Endli with a cool pattern. Also the one that has the scraped nose is either a lap or a congi but I only have one lap that I can go by so I am weaker on iding them. To me it is the head but cannot yet describe what it is that is so different.
