adding a 3rd filter for mechanical

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so 10" long, and 4" deep, and 8" in height ? that's a fair size.... but what kinda gph is it turning over when stuffed with sponge, and filter floss ?

I heard around that the gph is only around 50gph and not the 500 they brag about on the box. You can research about it here.

I find that the gph is a horrible way to base a filters "worth". The aquaclear 110 doesnt seem to filter very well as it just over flows water rather than a canister filter which forces water through the media. If it was truly 500gph then it would be 500gph/60mins=8.33gpm which is slightly stronger than a average garden hose which is too good to be true. My eheim sump pump (model 1250) cost around 100 bucks and is about 4 times bigger than the aquaclear 110's motor and also only does a max of 320gph at a 0 head. Somethings not right and theres no way a 110 is pushing 500 gph or anywhere near it. I advise you just get another canister filter

I've read good reviews on this canister and you can't beat the price. Just received mine a couple of days ago. This thing is going to be my main mechanical filter.

Did ya get that filter setup and running yet ? Just wondering how weel it works... Especially with those sponges being like 5" thick haha ... I do like the sounds of 700gph and even when full is like 500gph or so likely... For that to come to me in Ontario here is 149$ then I'll have duty and tax so likely close to 200$ roughly

Yes exactly as the ac110 advertised as 500gph likely empty not full.... Is there another filter out there that about same outside dimensions as a xp3/xp4 ?? But have more gph ? I'd add another fx5 but damn there so heavy and bulky lol

I have had great luck with my fluval 406 on my 55.

The AC110 will work very well for Mech filtration. It's actual flow rate has been tested as high as 420 GPH. Tests here on MFK have shown 300 gph and myself got just shy of 400 gph.

You will need to clean about every three weeks for optimum preformance. Also cut the sponge in half lengthwise and stack the two halves. This makes for easier cleanings, since the sponge is strickly for mech wash thuroughly under hot tap water.

Since it's on the internet it must be true. :duh:

+1 for the ac110, you can clean/change the media in 30 seconds... Id never aim to do primarily mechanical with a canister too much of a pain to service.

I have fx5's and ac 110 love them both tried other canisters as well but I can't see that u need all that filtration on a. 150
You must have a large bio load from your fish
