Adding a red devil?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You have a beautiful tank and stock, but if I were you I wouldn't risk adding the RD. If you're dead set on adding another cichlid there are other options that may be better. I haven't heard of many Red Devils that play nice with others and would hate to see your nice tank harmed.

Do you have any other suggestions that would work better?

I think you about fully stocked, alot of those fish are going to get big

I'd try the Red Devil personally, but I've also traded fish in and out of my tanks alot, too. If you don't want to try a Red Devil, I think another Vieja type would probably have a little better chance of working out in there.

A Breidhori would probably go well with the Syn's. They grow kinda quick, and the males look awesome, and they're easier to sex when young so if you ask for a male, you'll probably get a male.

Hello thank you for the reply. I decided that I would not try the red devil especially after all the stories about them. He was an extremely beautiful fish and didn't seem too aggressive in the store. However I did decide against it.

I was offered some fish from a person that was closing down her tank. The fish they offered were:
1. A true male red terror @10 inches ( was told wasn't overly aggressive and was being housed with a 3 inch Jack Dempsey)
2. A female jaguar cichlid @10 inches
3. A freddy cichlid - Parachromis friedrichsthalii @ 6inches. Sex Unknown.

All the fish are beautifully coloured and in great health. Especially the red terror.
I'm super interested in them all. But unsure how well the red terror would work from what I have heard about them. And same with the jaguar especially when I am unsure of the Sex of mine.
The freddy is a super beautiful fish that I was told is quite placid and Doesn't bother any of the other fish in the tank (red terror, jaguar, carpintis, Jack demspey) but can also hold it's own

DAYUMN, I would take those if I were in Australia :( All these fish I want, but nowhere near me do they seem to be. TBH, 2 of the 3 can be as nasty or WORSE than a Red Devil, and Devils are pretty damn vicious......mine were/are all psychotic

Which do you think would be the most likely to work out??

Probably the Friedrichstalli, but idk, I never owned a Yellowjacket or a Red Terror. If it was my 250g, I'd put them all in there and take out anything that's either super-dominant or getting beat-up, choice is up to you. If you still want to add a Red Devil, your best bet would to include it with a group like that, they stand the best chances of getting along if you add them at the same time, but STILL, there are some really heavy hitters in there.....Me personally, I would try it for lunacy's sake and just to see if it can be done because I have plenty of tanks to move things to and friends to take stuff with huge tanks

When it comes to the red terror I was told it has never bothered any other fish Exocet for a green terror that decided to fight for dominance with it. Was also told after the female jaguar was introduced the red devil was no longer the dominate fish.
From the pictures I can see that the friedrichstalli is a female.
Also just out of curiosity (will not be doing this) i believe my jaguar is a female. Would 2 female Jaguars get along better then say a male and a female or two males. I know all fish are different just wondering :)

Absolutely. You can do 2 F or even 3 or 4 if u got space, and you can also do a Male w/ several females, but that ends if they pair up and the tank is too small.

However, you can almost NEVER do 2 Male Jaguars, and I would vote nor of any Parachromis.

I had 2 pairs of Jags all got them when they were 2" and around 4-6" I could already start being able to tell which were gonna pair-up
