Hi i have a 10 gallon with 7 Julii cory cats with only one sponge filter cleaning it. I figured i needed another filter so i added a brand new AC 30. My question is.. Am i at risk for having a spike? Since the AC 30 is more powerful than the sponge its going to be filtering more of the water making my sponge filter less effective right? If it is, how can i safely establish my new filter? Thanks for your help.

Adding another filter will not cause a spike in ammonia or nitrite. As long as you added it and did not remove the other one. The bacteria in the sponge filter will continue to consume ammonia and convert it to nitrates. Over time, the bacteria will also seed the AC30 (although there will be then less on the sponge filter), its all an equilibrium.

If you want to immediately "seed" the AC30, pull the sponge off the sponge filter and put it in your AC30. All the bacteria will now be in the AC30. No spikes....

Burt :)

Id leave the setup as is assuming your ammonia and nitrite is at 0. Then just run the aqua clear as recommended. You should not see spikes of any kind with this method.
