i was wondering if it was safe to add fish to my tank from a pond in my backyard? i was thinking of adding a perch and a bass.

quarantine them

what yellow perch said. quarantine them for a good 2 weeks to be absolutely certain you dont bring parasites into the tank. Because if you do, it'll be a ***** to get rid of.

even with adding crawfish fish can have different types of parasites that crustaceans are immune to, be sure to keep em in a separate tank for a few weeks, get them eating, check for parasites, etcs - you'll regret it if you dont and they bring in some kind of crazy disease

What tank-mates will they have? Mixing tropicals and NA natives are never a good idea. as US fish are generally coldwater species that require high levels of O2 to thrive in captivity. A large reason why most our fish don't end up in tanks.. But with that being said. Your best bets are generally panfish and bass. while perch/pike/walleye/ect are generally harder to keep, and often require the use of a chiller. Also don't forget to take into account the potential size of the fish. Bass in particualar can and will hit 18"+ so larger then an Oscar in general. small mouth being on the lower end of the size spectrum then your largemouth. But still a very respectable size, and temperments not far off from many Cichlid species.

also the general facts that your tropicals wouldn't be immune to common coldwater disease and vise versa really set's up a potential breedingground of parasites and bacterial/viral/fungal/ ect infections to take hold on either type.

If your interested in doing a Native tank it can be very rewarding, but imo They simply shoudn't be mixed with tropicals unless you are OK with the fact your likely to loss fish. and the fish you take should never be released to your pond or another body of water once exposed to tropical fish in particular, Period. Even if it is a private pond and perfectly legal. the possability of introduceing foreign junk isn't worth it.

Yes it will be great, even I have also done this before as I care my pond regularly do cleaning and have nice filtration system for both my pond and tank. So fishes are healthy and I transfer it.

IME Tropicals (cichlids, cats, bichir, knifefish) mix fine with natives (variety of sunfish and a bullhead cat).

On the issue of quarantine, this is a must unless you are willing to gamble on you tank getting nasty's in it. I actually did not quarintine my big bluegill and am extremely happy that nothing bad happen. But on my next catch, 2 bluegill and a pumkinseed, I quarantined them for a month. Again no nasty's present but I was able to adjust them to tank life easier in a smaller tank, letting them know that pellets are food, so when they joined the others they knew they had to compete for food.

I've never kept a perch or bass, although I plan on keeping a bass, but I hear perch can be tricky to make the change to prepared food.
