Adding on to my pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I ojly have String Algae problems on my waterfall area where the water travels down, but cutting it isn't much of a real back breaker its more of a way to watch your fish while not just watching them, if it makes sense. I'll snap some pictures of my pond tomorrow and post them up. Looking forward to seeing your ponds to.

UV won't work on the string algae.

Barley straw will help break it down, but it isn't overnight. The barley needs water temps. above 60* to be effective and plenty of areation. You can also find berley extract in liquid form which works a little faster, but still needs the right temps. to be effective.

Plants will be the best way to combat nusiance algae. I would def. do the bog in the remodel. You can cram all kinds of plants in there that will absorb extra nutrients....

It finally stopped raining, so I was able to take some pics today.

Please pardon the messiness. The snow finally melted about a week ago, so the pond is far from flourishing right now. But for now this should help you guys get a visual of what I'm working with and can help me explain what my plans are.

As I stated earlier the pond is divided into two main sections. These first four pictures show the first section, which is the higher section and was re-done two years ago. The waterfall leading in was made last year. The small bodies at the tops of the waterfalls are a real hot spot for string algae. I am hoping to resolve this issue by adding some small pickle rush among other plants. I will also add more rocks so that there is less water seeing direct sunlight. The rocks petruding out of the water might be a nice look too.

The next three pictures are of the stream that brings water from the first main body to the second. This has also been a sore spot for string algae. To help fight it there I plan on taking all the small rocks out of there that currently fill most of it. That is where most of the biological waste tends to gather that the filter doesn't get right away. I am instead going to just place a few large rocks at the bottom for looks only. The stream dumps into the second main body of water under the bridge. I intend to fill the area under the bridge will small rocks to gather the floating waste and debris. I am going to lay some pvc pipe from the filter in the middle of the rocks where the waste should gather, so I can suck the waste directly out from where it gathers. I'm hoping it will work wonders. Worst case, at least the crap is gathering under the bridge rather than on the surface of the stream for everyone to see.

These next pictures are of the second body of water.
This is the section that is getting redone. The basic shape will be the same, as you can see I'm kind of limited. The overall length from the start of the bridge to the end will be around 20 feet. About 6 feet wide at its widest point. And 5-6' deep at its deepest. The green filter will be hidden with the new design. With the other filter now in place this doesn't do too much anyway, but it is a nice easy access place to put polishing pads and whatnot. The new pond will be pushing out a little past where the green filter and windmill and chimenea are now. The bog will be at the furthest point behind that.

This is the watermill house I built two summers ago. There is a little pump that brings water up to the troth and down onto the wheel, which is usually about 2" deep into the water. It provides a little aeration, but is mainly for looks.

Here are some aerial shots I took as well as a picture or two of the filter and UV light.

I hope the pictures aren't too depressing lol. Every year I look out at this time and wonder how it will ever look nice again. But every year it comes back, so I have faith.

Now that you've heard my plans, please let me know if you have any suggestions or questions or anything. I plan on starting the project in about 2-3 weeks, so anything that could help save me some time/problems down the road would be great to know.

I picked up the underlayment two days ago, and got the liner today. I'm excited!

I have used barley straw in the past, but don't think I used it last summer. I will definitely be getting back to it this year.

Also, if someone could tell me how to put pictures directly in the post instead of links... that would be great!

Thanks.

When you start a new post, click the icon that looks like a paper clip. It will say attachments. You can then manage attachments, which will be you pics. on your computer. Upload them, may take a minute or two for each pic. once you have all the pics. select close this window. When you then click on the paper clip again, the pics. can be selected and then entered into the post.

Looks awesome!!!

Many head aches with all the different elevations and pieces of liner?

With the new bog and the end of the line, I guarantee water quality and clarity will improve. I'm assuming the fish load is greatest at the end pond? If so, the bog will tackle the most of the filtering duties first with the other smaller filters used to polish and handle extra bio duties.

Is the bog going to have a snorkel and vault system for a pump?

Any plans for a clean out if not using a vault?

In the bog, Umbrella plant and Common Bull Rush grow really fast and can consume a lot of waste. Joe Pye Weed is another tall growing plant with flowers. It will however attract a lot of bees along w/btterflies, so maybe not the best choice around the deck and pool.

So today is the first sunny day that we have had in a long time so i decided to run out side with the camera and take a few shots. Sorry they are only quick shots i want to get out there today and start working on it..

Enjoy
