Adding Salt!!??

you wouldn't want a messed up reef tank especially with how much everything costs lol.

You should check out my 20 gallon reef tank that has 6 cerith snails, 2 turbo snails, a scarlet reef hermit crab, 2 electric blue hermit crab, a peppermint shrimp, a Condy anemone, a button polyp coral, a clownfish (getting a second one soon), and a yellow tail blue damsel fish. The tank is looking better and better. I set it up on 11/22/08. I'll post a youtube video of it either today or tomorrow.

By the way, how big is your tank?

I have 2 aquaclear 20's on it and a Maxi-Jet 600 pump. I am not using a skimmer. It took me less than 2 weeks to cycle. I started my Clean up crew. At 3 weeks, I got my first two fish. One of them wasn't acting so well so I returned it the next day and got the damsel and anemone. Everything is doing great so far. Not one death (knock on wood). I'll hopefully upload the video by 10.

i got my test kit today

water paramters are:
Ph:8.3
Nitrite:0ppm
Ammonia:0ppm
Nitrate:20ppm
Salinity:29ppm
Specific Gravity:1.022
Temperature:25c

Is this good for fish
i added the salt yesterday

Do you have anything making ammonia in your tank? a tank can't get cycled in a day...

+ if it is cycled, try to decrease the nitrates.

whatcha mean making ammonia
i added salt yesterday but everything else(sand filters powerhead)
has been in for about or over over a week

also this same thing happened with the same tankwhen doing fresh
i set it up and everything was fine i added an oscar and he was fine
he lived for half a year and then i sold him back to the shop because of what im doin now

In order to cycle a tank, you need something to make waste. When using live rock, there is a die-off that fuels the cycle. When not using live rock, try a raw cocktail shrimp in a filter bag.

There is completely different bacteria in saltwater so running it without salt wouldn't do anything. Try adding some live sand and live rock rubble to seed your tank.

you should use an ro or di filter to filter the tap water before putting it into your tank. Tap water has phosphates and silicates and other harmful substances that cause algae and are bad for a reef.

Live rock makes the cycle much faster and provides most of the biological activity in the tank. It will also seed you sand so it will become live sand.

Get both the rock and ro filter
