adding salt?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh. does talk make the tank softer then? and wat would lower the pH? i heard peat moss might.

Why would you lower the pH? What fish do you keep? What are your KH and GH?

How high is it exactly? What fish are you trying to keep? Most fish are fine with anything at as high as 8.5.

Whats 'Pure salt'?

And why would you use it over raw sea salt?
pure salt is exactly what it sounds like pure salt as in nothing but NaCl a.k.a any non iodonized salt EXCEPT sea salt which has other buffers in it which are VERY bad for a freshwater aqaurium (make your pH go through the roof)

no salt will not lower the pH the myth comes from the fact that people use salt in water softeners which merely use salt as an ion exchange medium that swaps calcium and magnesium for salt the same process does not occur if the salt is dissolved in water

don't mess with your pH unless you are keeping fish that are extremely sensitive (wild caught discus for example) as lupin said most fish can tolerate up to atleast 8

only mess with pH if you have a water source that can supply the same parameter water so there will be no swings during water changes ( this usualy means prepraparing the water in a large tub or the use of an RO filter)

im not sure how high exactly, only thats its just wayyy to high.(lfs guy tested it for me and he even had to use a saltwater tester to check it) i had a young EBJD in my tank and i am thinking that might be the cause.

Get your own API liquid drop kits and do not rely on him to test the water for you. Chances are your pH is simply hovering around 7-8.5. Not high in my book.
