Adding Salt?

It reduces stress, kills parasites, and improves gill function. I would use it, but it would kill my plants. It will also kill snails if you have them.

I don't add salt at all, unless I'm treating a disease, or my fish come from waters that are brackish.
What kind of fish are you asking about?
+1 When it comes to aquarium salt (NACL) it's been many years since I've used it for anything other than therapeutic reasons (other minerals a little different story). This includes African rift lake fish, no matter which of the 3 major lakes. Brackish water fish are a little different situation, but the 3 major African rift lakes are freshwater and are no more brackish than the North American great lakes (references to this in a variety of sources, for example, see this chart).

(Note-- there are a few of the smaller African lakes with cichlids with fairly extreme conditions, including high temps, very high pH, and salty.)

My take (and experience) is there are a lot of misconceptions about the necessity or benefits of salt as a general water conditioner or as preventive maintenance, not that it doesn't have its uses. Just about anything else I could say about it (and more) is already covered here.
