Well, I bought a few bags of PFS and I'm rinsing and adding them today. Do I have to drain the aquarium first? I don't want to because I've been carefuly cycling it and I don't want to mess anything up by adding a bunch of new water, but I don't have a bucket big enough to store 180 gallons of water taken out of the aquarium either. If I rinse it good can I just pour it in if the filter is off, won't it settle pretty quick?

I would get a piece of PVC pipe and pour it through that to the bottom of the tank will cut down on the mess. It should settle quickly.

nice idea.. but too slow and messy (if sand is already wet) for me....
unless maybe I use a 12"plus diamater piece of pvc..lol :)

I"m using sand for the first time now too, but need to add more yet.. settles for me with filter off in about 4-8hours, then water just needs a little polishing

Takes ome of the water out and add some to the sand. Then it will pretty much just slide down as long as the pipe is held at an angle. It is a lil slow but nowherenear as messy as just dumping it in. I think the pipe I used was arround 2"-3".

last bag I added.... dunked it partially in water, took razor blade and slit the bag.... no filter running, mostly clear in 2-4hours. then filter on, and extra clear in another 3-6hours..
