i want to add shells with my gravel to boost my ph is it safe to add with my exsiting established gravel???? cichlid gravel is what i think its called but it just looks like a bunch of shells and coral

should be fine, i used reguler gravel in my tank and my water is alkaline to begin with but i feed my fish alot of shelfish, and the left over shel fragments seem to be buffering the water even more then it was originialy. but yes it would probuly be better to have this in a established tank with no signs on ammonia present, as ammonia becomes more toxic as the water becomes more alkaline.

if you have eco-complete african cichlid substrate, shell wont help it any. If you add more shells, do it for decor. pH wont go any higher with additional shells

If you want it to raise your pH without mixing it with the existing gravel, add some to your canister filter (if you have one) or pour some into a media bag and stuff it into your power filter.
I have silica sand in my african tank and i just added some crushed coral to one of my biowheels and it stays around 8.0

ahhhh ha now that sounds like a good idea i have cans and hobs

just fill one tray of the canister filter full, that should do. you can use a media bag so it doesnt make a mess.
