substrate is purly optional!!! it should if any used be placed before the water but still be add later wash well like for mentioned...

yes just wash it really well

yes.. ive just did it a few weeks ago. I washed the sand really well turned off the filters for a few mins and pour the sand in. Once the sand has settled down just turn back on the filters again.

Gettin ready to swap out some of my black sand and put in some lighter colored sand in my 125...so it should be kewl. Shut off your filters, wash it, and try to get it as close to the bottom of the tank before you release it, that way there will be less dispersion into the water column...
