Adding sugar and magnesium to aquarium to grow Nostoc balls?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
would be very cool, IMO to have them as a substrate...I have a feeling my goldfish would love to play with them, they push around my floating thermometer.

Yeah, I was imagining a little five or ten gallon carpeted with them. But they pop easily, so precautions would have to be taken. Supposedly snails occasionally nibble at them, too. Not sure about the implications of that yet.

tried a few different searches, they all seem to be actual scientific research nothing "un-government funded" like this tho...

...sadly didn't get out today, tomorrow from 6-8ish i'll be looking

So far most of them look stable, but the two I put in my coldwater daphnia culture have emptied their contents into a big fuzzy green mushroom. It's not really pic-worthy, they look like partially-mashed peas. The rest look good. I'm pretty sure the one by itself in the window with my planaria and hydra is forming new lobes.

The sugar and salt group did not grow at all. I've drained the container and filled it with dechlorinated tap water and moved it near a light.

The individuals I placed in different vases around the house are growing, and the one in my pond-vase with all the daphnia, scuds, hydra, etc. is getting really huge and looks to be budding. I think I'll be keeping nostoc in lit vases for now.
