Hey everyone. Well I was doing my once every month partial water change and was wondering if I could refill the tank with a water hose. I have a 240 gallon tank and take out and replace about 75 gallons each time. I have been using a rubbermaid tub about 20 gallons at a time. I fill the tub and and water conditioner. I have a bad shoulder and don't look forward to it every month. If I am correct, Python users refill their tanks from the tap. How do they condition the water? Do they add conditioner before re-filling or after re-filling? What should I do if I use a garden hose. Also, because it's coming from a hose outside of my house, would 75 gallons of cold water effect my fish much? Thanks, The Doctor.

Garden hoses have been known to leech chemicals in to the water that are harmful to fish. I think the temp shock from an outside faucet would be very stressful for the fish.

I think people who use pythons generally try to match the water temp as best they can and add the dechlor as they go. A better way would be to take the water from the tap with the pyton into a holding tank of some sort and add the dechlor there before it goes to the tank.

Doctor, I would consider increasing the size of your rubbermaid tub and rigging a powerhead and hose to pump your water into your tank rather than lifting and risking injury. This way you can condition and adjust your temperature prior to adding the new water via powerhead/hose.

I've done my share of 5 gallon buckets!!
Your comments make me appreciate building my tank into an area that had both water supply and drain. I have 3 canister filters, 2 mechanical and 1 activated carbon in line with my water supply. The water temperature doesn't get too cold in the Houston winter so I just hose it straight into the tank. My hose is clear 1/2" tubing not garden hose.

I use a Python to refill my tank and it comes from the faucet outside. I use to fill my tank with the garden hose. As long as I used water conditioner, I had no problems.

I live over in Hayward and wouldn't consider using untreated water in my tanks. I am unfamiliar with the python but, will tell you my method. I have 2 rubbermaid cans 32g w/wheels. One I fill and outgas overnight. Treated (amquel)water as well. The other can I syphon the tank, pump it outside and feed the yard. Then I wheel the other water over and refill the tank by pump. The fish don't seem to mind the temp. drop and I have discus. I am a motorcycle racer so I deal with injury and dragging a can is better than heavy lifting to me. Hope this helps. Cheers from the eastbay!

Hey Westie, so you live in Hayward. Maybe you can come over every month and change my water?!!!:naughty::ROFL:J/K.

From Matthews "Doctor, I would consider increasing the size of your rubbermaid tub and rigging a powerhead and hose to pump your water into your tank rather than lifting and risking injury. This way you can condition and adjust your temperature prior to adding the new water via powerhead/hose".

I think that's a great idea. I actually have a pump I was going to use for my sump that I never built and that would work. Thanks everyone, The Doctor.

I use the hose for my 240, never a problem

i use the water hose everytime i do a water change put the prime in the water first and fill it up
