The boys/girls are starting to outgrow their 55g growout. Only took 3 months! So it's time to start preparing to move them to their new home (180g).Right now I'm running an AC70,110, and a Quicksand Fluid bed. I just picked up an XP4 and I'm going to run it on the 55 for a month at most, then move it over to the 180. I'll add another canister after the sand in the new tank is fully cycled.

Stocklist:

1 P bass 7"
1 Red Hi-Fin Wolf 6"
1 Clown Knife 7"
1 Florida Gar 8"
1 Rocket Gar 7"
1 gold Tinfoil 6"
2 Clown Loaches 3"/4"
1 Gibbaceps PL 7"

Should I expect an ammonia or nitrite spike while the canister is cycling on the 55? Should I run it slow until it's cycled?

there should be no spikes from adding a filter. only if you add bio load.
and as for your stocklist. True gars(your florida) are a no go with chilids or p bass.

what? am i misunderstanding his question?
actually to read the stocklist closer alot of those fish dont seem like they should go together. dont really know only have experience with some of those fish

god
now you got me second geussing myself

I guess I'm still not sure if I'm going to get a spike in ammonia or nitrite from putting such an oversized new filter on there. As far as the stocklist, everyone gets along fine. I'm going to put the clown loaches in another tank because they won't grow fast enough to not wind up on the menu. The Rocket gar will probably be moved out too. The wolf gets along fine. He hangs out in the driftwood right alongside the loaches. He only has 1 eye, so even if he chases something, they can get away easy enough. And, there is room to move around in there. They have been in there since they were all only 3". I was just putting some size on them before putting them in the 180. I don't like putting small fish in large tanks because I wind up overstocking it just to fill the space.
BTW, I have 50 tanks running besides the one at home, as well as over 25-30 empties standing by when I need them. So moving fish around is never a problem. :)

Wow thats a ton of fish in a 55. No you wont get a spike from adding a remover only from removing bio media which I would not do in your case. Hope you find a nice big home for all those fish they are all awesome fish to have in big show tanks :)

Sorry I did not read your post before posting. Sounds like you got it all together. A 180 with that stock list is gonna be sweet. And its still a no on adding a big filter and getting a spike it will only help in your situation. I might suggest adding it to the over stocked 55 and letting it run for a week or two then moving it to the 180 to help it cycle fast if it is not already cycled.

Thx. That's the plan. Cycle the canister on the 55. Then move it over to the 180. Just wanted check here to be sure before setting it up tomorrow. I'm buying the 180 new, so as soon as that filter is cycled, they'll be moved right away. If my daughter didn't break the camera, I could have posted some pics. I will when I get a new one.
