Well today I went into work at petsmart (yeah jig is up, i work at a poopsmart) for my one day a week that i work, (doctor's orders until my hand clears up) and my last friend that works there told me there was something that I might like.
I followed her behind the fish wall to see a cloudy white 20 gallon tank. I couldn't even see into it, but I saw a slight discoloration towards the back or the tank. I walked around to look from the front and in this 20 gallon tank was a male and female flowerhorn.
The male is over 12 inches in length and the female is 8 (both including tail). Somebody apparently dropped them off in a bread box or something, but jesus this tank looked like hell in a glass box. No gravel, objects, white from all the ammonia of a TOPFIN 20 cycling, soggy pellets floating at the top, no heater...
...Flowerhorns are seriously very hardy fish (unlike discus, I have an ongoing argument on the discus forum where some cocky people like to boast their skills at keeping discus by stating their opinions as facts like "discus are hardy" and "discus are easy to take care of". I would like to have seen a discus survive in this vile deathbox that was a sad excuse for an aquarium)
So anyway, I did some switching around and gave a couple fish to my girlfriend for her 75g and put the pair in my 55 complete with a sandy bottom, fake plants, driftwood and a plethora of flat/angled rocks. They were swimming around the 55 every so often, but I am sure they are still acclimating. They had apparently been in the 20 gallon for 3 days. If these fish survive it is a miracle, and right now they aren't looking too pretty. Female had scales hanging off, but the male looks very red around the throat and chest area. I don't care I feel liek I saved a couple lives.
I was worried they wouldn't even make it through my 4 hour shift. Oh and they also threw in a full bag of Aquarian brand cichlid pellets for large cichlids. So far, they havn't taken a liking to them whatsoever. I don't know why the manager pulled them though as oppose to the hikari gold because a bag of the same size pellet and ounce was a dollar cheaper.
I will post pics maybe tomorrow if they are looking alright and can handle a flash.
Oh and for anyone who wants to know what I did with my otehr flowerhorn (about 3 inches now) I put him in the 29 by himself. For now, untill he gets a bit larger and I get another 55. I will take pics of both tomorrow.
