I adopted 2 ID sharks, they are both torn up a lot, but one is missing an eye too. I have them in my 55 with melafix and salt right now, how long do you think they should stay in there with that before I can put them in my pool/pond with the other catfish? And should I be putting anything else in the tank with them to help them heal up?

well you will know when they are well ..when there wounds completly dissapear and heal... and when they are eating good.. i would only use the melafix and salt like your doing.. over medication is not helpful.. but definitly watch for bacterial infections as then you would need an antibiotic.. you should be able to know if they start being active and eating that they are on the road to healing. But it make take some time before you can move them..

well the problem is, they are in the 55 with 2 baby oscars that I'm growing out, they were the only ones I had no where else to move, and I was wanting to get them in the pond as soon as I could so I could move everyone else back into the grow-out tank. I certainly want them to be healed up first, I just wasn't sure if anyone knew about how long that would take. I know I saw someone on here that had rescued an ID shark that had lost an eye, just haven't had a chance to look for it yet...

some pictures...the first two of are the bigger one, who took most of the beating, he's the one missing an eye, the last one is of the smaller one, and he's in better shape, just looks like some slight fin tears and his skin is all scratched up...sorry for the quality, they don't like to hold still for pics.

They are eating okay, but the bigger one swims kinda weird (I'm assuming it's because of his eye) and is slow getting to the food, but I think he'll eat better after he's healed up and away from the food-hoarders that we call oscars...

just the black part is missing out of his eye, it's in the first pic. You can't see it very well, but the rest of his eye is still there, just the pupil is gone.

Post a pic of them when you can.. so i can get a better idea of how they are..

actually looking at him now, I was told he's missing an eye, but I don't think he is, it's just REALLY cloudy. Is this a disease of some sort, and if so, will the salt/melafix treat it or do I need to be using something else?

wow those pics came up fast..i think they are looking pretty good and if they are eating etc ..i think you are looking at about a month..during feeding time maybe you can slip a divider in so the oscars stay on one side and you can make sure the one with missing eye is getting his fair share..good deal that you saved them.. they are beauties in spite of there injuries.. they should do well with you! Do you see any white on the eye? They look pretty good in the picture..

Thanks Liz, you always have such nice things to say. I wasn't planning on anymore catfish for the big tank, but I couldn't pass this up, I don't think there are very many people in this area that could have provided the kind of home for them that I am going to, and I hope they grow up to be big and healthy.
