My cali king is going on 12 years old. Great snake...i've been bitten maybe twice in that entire time. Shes about 5.5 feet and in a 75g. Considering they are very active snakes i would go 40 breeder or 55 minimum. She went to the 75 from a 29 and never does the endless search for escape except for when i put her back.

Heat pad, heat emitter, basking bulb...all good. For substrate i do half aspen half reptile carpet/glass....she seems to prefer the glass to cool off in the summer. IME they love to burrow and like a big dish for soaking.

Great snakes good luck and post pics.

I keep Mt kings but agree the kings need room ESP Ca and Florida kings they are active and explore if given the chance.

I love CA kings esp high whites but all look great .
I never got one because as a whole have heard high feeding responce which equals getting bit but I see you and others here have different experiences.

I take mine out of his tank before I put in his prey du jour. That way I don't get the feeding response by reaching into the tank, the food is there when he goes back.

I keep ruthvens and arizona mt kings they are laid back never been bitten but oldest one is only 6 years thus you never know.

I allways thought CA kings were big biters and regardless of feeding in enclosure or not they bit but I see I was wrong.

Ca kings come in some of the nicest patterns out there.

i love the things your saying about them but i have a friend who wants to get rid of his sand boa so im gonna take that instead but i do hope to get one eventually. thanks for the imput

i personally enjoy the sand boa over the kingsnake, i've kept both and the sand boa had much less of a temper, although it really depends on the individual.
