I am thinking about starting a 55G cichlid tank but I prefer smaller fish. If I were to stock my tank, is there a decent market for adult cichlids? What I mean is, can I grow them from a small size and once they get a little too large for my tastes sell them off? Would people buy adult cichlids? I know it depends on the species, but I am just testing the waters, if you will. Any information would be great.

Ask your LFS. They probally won't give you money, but store credit is a good thing. Some people will buy/trade fish depending on species and age.

There is always a market for large cichlids. But once you grow them out, you are not going to easily part with them. More than likely, you will upgrade your tank when they get bigger. Also, it can take some time to get a good mix put together. If you do african ciclids, try to get compatible fish from the start. They take up to two years to get to full size and color.

Umm u could just keep about 15 to 18 adult mbunas in a fifty five if u didn't want to part about 90percent stay 5inches is that big?

My LFS has adult Africans for sale as well as juvi's ..............the juvi's clear out quick; the adults are there for months. Heres a price breakdown for ya

Electric blue ahli :
Juvi- $10
Adult -$70 and still there

btw i'm not being a jerk just kinda seems pointless to do that IMO

Naw, I didnt take it that way, I just dont like fish as much once they get past a certain size. I may change my mind though, certain fish seem to grow on me over time. Not literally, of course.

I ahve several fish that I had planned on getting rid of but now cant part with.

my lfs sells the adult ones for like $20-30 if they go higher than that they don't sell... with the time and $ spent on feeding these guys you might end up wanted to keep them especially with african cichlids as it takes time to get them to fully color up and they get more interesting as adults too!!

Join a local club, then someone there will trade or buy them from you. It sounds like you just want to raise them to breeding age and then get rid of them. If this is the case, people at your local club will almost definately be interested.
